Now we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.
This verse means we have a great treasure from God within us and that treasure is the anointing. The anointing is not a substance, He is a person and that is the person of the Holy Spirit. We did not receive a junior Holy Spirit but we the scripture says in John 1:16 “And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace”. We have the fullness of God living in us, this is clearly stated in Col 2:9 “For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body”.
Whenever you see the word Christ in the bible it refers to the Holy Spirit who is the Anointing, and that makes the person His is upon and Anointed One. Jesus was called Jesus Christ after He was baptised in the Spirit or baptised in the anointing. In the same way Christians are called Anointed Ones because of the anointing. One of the reasons why we have not fully seen or manifested the anointing in our lives is that we have not fully grasped what it means to be anointed.
You are anointed
When we say you are anointed, what does that mean?
According to 1 John 2:20 “You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth”
The Greek word for anoint is “Chrisma” from the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance is “an unguent or smearing, i.e. (figuratively) the special endowment (“chrism”) of the Holy Spirit — anointing, unction”.
We are not looking for an anointing; we are already anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. That same power dwells within us according to Rom 8:11 “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you”.
How to release the anointing
The next question in our minds should be okay so now I know I am anointed, how do I release the power of anointing in my life? The answer to this is so simple that I sometimes wonder how we miss it. Okay let me reveal to you the grand revelation on how to release the power of God inside of you. Drum roll please…
It’s simply by faith.
What you mean it’s that simple? Yes it is, if you are anointed just act like it. I’m not saying fake it till you make it. You are already anointed according to the bible, and then simply do what anointed people do.
What do anointed people do? You may ask well that us what the whole New Testament shows us.
- Do the works of Jesus.
According to Acts 10:38 “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him”.
The anointing is for service, the anointing is not just for us to get goose bumps whenever our favourite worship son comes on. It’s for us to do the works of the ministry. It’s meant for us to destroy the works of the devil by healing the sick, raising the dead and casting out devils wherever we go.
- Pour out into other vessels.
One of the keys of maintaining and growing in the anointing is to pour yourself out into other vessels. We see this principle in the story of Elisha and the widow in 2 Kings 4:6 “When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing”.
The easiest way for us to dry up and not keep the anointing fresh and flowing is to stop pouring out. Sometimes when I feel dry, yes even preachers feel dry sometimes. We don’t go by our feelings because feelings and flaky and we cannot depend on them. I simply step out by FAITH and start ministering or praying for the sick not by a hearing a voice telling me to do so. Guess what happens Holy Spirit shows up every time because His role is to glorify the name of Jesus. He can’t help Himself whenever He sees a believer stepping out in faith to honour the name of Jesus. He will back you up according to Mark 16:20 “And they went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked through them, confirming His word by the signs that accompanied it”.
- Becoming a broken vessel.
One of the keys that is not very well known for releasing the anointing within us is becoming a broken vessel. We get this illustration in the story of the Alabaster box in Matt 26:7 “a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table”.
While the perfume was in the jar it did not perform its rightful function until it was poured out. The same is true with is as long as the anointing within us is not being poured out it does not benefit anyone. 2 Cor 4:7-10 says “7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body”.
I would say the trials and tribulations that Paul and his companions faced helped them to become broken and dependent not on themselves but on God. That is the key I found in my life that released the power of God within me. Our culture teaches us to be dependent on ourselves but we must learn to be dependent on the Holy Spirit and realise that without Him we can do nothing. That is the key to releasing the power within you. Sometimes God might use tests, trials and temptations to being us to that point but he knows the way that wills ultimately lead us to be place of brokenness and yieldedness. We all know the story of Jacob and how he became Israel in Gen 32:22-31 where God literally broke his hip and he walked with a limp the rest of his life. He had always trusted in his cunning abilities and his strength but God took that away from him just before he met Esau. He had no choice but to trust in God.
Also the story of Saul on the road to Damascus in Acts 9:1-11. He had an encounter with Jesus that left him blinded and dependent on God. Jesus sent Ananias to pray for him and restore his sight.
We all need an encounter with God. We need an encounter with the Anointed one and His Anointing. It may not be as dramatic as wrestling with an Angel, or seeing a vision of Jesus but God knows how to break us. It is usually easier when we yield to him willing and let Him do His work in and through us because it He has to do it Himself it usually is painful as Jonah.
- Love the more excellent way
The last point I will raise about walking in the anointing is walking in love. It is so important to bring balance to this teaching because if we seek the anointing and power of God outside of love, it is a dangerous thing. It is like handing a loaded gun to a child, they will ultimately hurt themselves or someone else.
Paul admonished us in 1 Cor 12:31 “31 But earnestly desire the best[d] gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way”. 1 Cor 13:1-3 “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing”.
It doesn’t matter how anointed we are, if we do not walk in love it profits us nothing. Jesus said in Matt 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
God desires to release the fullness of the power that is within us but for our own sake He will withhold it back so we don’t end up being destroyed. Paul gave us the secret to walking in the fullness of the power of God in Eph 3:17-19 “17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God”.
He said to us in theses verses that for us to walk un the fullness of God we need to know the love of God. The Holy Spirit spoke these words to me a while ago just as I woke up in the morning “God cannot entrust us with the fullness of His power unless we learn how to walk in love”.
This is similar to what Paul says in Eph 3; 13 “till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”. The perfect man or the measure of the stature of the fullness is a man mature in love.
